Norman Borlaug is my hero.
Frankly, I think he should be everyone's hero. I don't know what he's like personally, but even if he were one of the world's prize Unpleasant People, saving the lives of one billion people is heroism on a heroic scale.
The tone of the article I linked to above is rather unfortunately self-congratulatory, but it really is a shame that people like Dr. Borlaug aren't better-known. He's probably just as glad not to be an international celebrity pursued by paparazzi, but it would be wonderful if we really paid as much attention and gave as much respect to humanitarians and scientists as we do to movie actors and sports figures.
