Sealion II

ANGRY LETTER
Today I wrote the following to my Congressional representative, Nancy Pelosi:

Dear Representative Pelosi,

I have read about the latest developments in Capitol Hill culture (the searching of Rep. Jefferson’s (D-La.) office for evidence of accepting bribes) with very great dismay and anger. The pretended outrage of Congressional representatives and Senators is, to my eyes, transparently motivated by a desire to prevent any investigation into Congressional corruption—and this at a time when evidence of such corruption is becoming ever more apparent.
It is absolutely unacceptable for Congress to behave as if its members had some kind of general immunity to the law. The fact that you, as representatives of the American people, make the laws should make you more, rather than less, responsible for keeping them, in both letter and spirit.
Please do not be deceived by the Republican outcry against this action; there may be bipartisan support for the sanctity of Rep. Jefferson’s office within the precincts of Capitol Hill, but this should not be interpreted as general support among Americans. I am a libertarian with Republican leanings and not a Democrat, but the mere fact that the Republican leadership has endorsed a given viewpoint means nothing to me; I would a thousand times rather have honest Democratic representation than crooked Republican representation.
Representative Pelosi, you were among many decrying a Republican “culture of corruption” in the recent past, and you were right to do so. But you cannot be unaware that the “culture of corruption” is neither Republican nor Democratic, but Washingtonian. Please, do not encourage it any further. Use your position of authority to begin to make a change in this culture. Call for Rep. Jefferson’s resignation and encourage continued investigation into all Congressional corruption. Surely simple honesty is not too much to ask from our American leaders.

I suppose I will probably get a little form letter in return, but it made me feel better. It makes me really, really angry to think that our "representatives" are out there in Washington fat-catting around and thumbing their nose at the law. I'm sure there must be one or two who don't, but you could never tell on present evidence.
